The 8th annual MORE Powder Puff Race for a CURE took a team of hard workers to pull off this weekend. The Government Shutdown forced MORE officials to pull the race from the usual Barstow desert with only a few days until ladies would take the green flag. Holli Bechard stepped up and was able to move the race to Glen Helen Raceway where racers and their teams were welcomed with open arms. The Glen Helen facility allowed racers to camp onsite free of charge and didn’t charge an entry for spectators as this is what the off road community was expecting from Barstow.
Despite last minute changes over 80 vehicles made it to the start of the now “short course” powder puff race. The course was made up of the traditional slick short course track with a few miles of desert thrown in to make it just under 4 miles. Each heat raced for about an hour and a half and as the ladies put down laps the more comfortable they got. We saw tons of passing going back and forth in the short course area where fans watched from the grand stands as well as the nearby wash section.
For the last minute detour MORE had to take thanks to the Government Shutdown they did a great job and a handful of the ladies are even interested in racing there again in the future (most mentioned that it was fun but they can’t wait to be back out in the wide open desert).
