Campbell and his Monster-backed rock crawling moon buggy run an unbelievable last-to-first event at the Johnson Valley OHV Park, Calif.

CORONA, Calif., (Feb. 25, 2008) – Monster Energy rock crawling/rock racing competitor Shannon Campbell wrapped up the “King of the Hammers” title this past weekend in stunning fashion, racing from dead last and passing some 43 vehicles en route to his 1st place overall finish at the unique Johnson Valley, Calif., event.

“Wow, what a race!,” said Campbell’s wife, Tammy. “Shannon had drawn the last starting position and told us before the race ‘Well, I can either say I started last and that’s why I finished last or I can say I started last and finished first.’”

Not one to whimper in the rough and tumble sport of rock racing, Campbell put his right foot into his Monster Energy-backed VW-powered Moon Buggy and started to click off driver after driver. Tammy jumped in a Mule with their friend Mitch and it was all they could do to keep up with the hard-charging Campbell and his barrage on the check points.

“At check point eight we noticed Shannon had lost a front axle joint cap,” said Tammy. “We needed a welder and out of the blue a guy came running across the desert yelling ‘I’ve got a welder!’ Same thing at the next section where Shannon needed a tire. Our support truck hadn’t even caught up to him yet, so another friend of ours loaned him one (a tire). We didn’t even have a jack, so everyone there – even a cameraman – helped hoist the Monster Energy VW-powered Moon Buggy up so we could get a tire on it!

“Shannon was steady, consistent and on fire!”

According to Campbell, the Monster Energy VW-powered Moon Buggy he raced was started on Feb. 4th and completed on Feb. 16th. The moto, tranny and shocks arrived at his Gilbert, Ariz., race shop just before they left for the King of the Hammers. You could imagine the wrenchfest that ensued.

“I wish I could have been in the helicopter to watch Shannon pick off those drivers one at a time,” said Tammy Campbell. “It was unbelievable.”

The next event for Campbell and Monster Energy VW-powered Moon Buggy is the opening round of the 2008 XRRA Rock Racing Series (March 22) in Moab, Utah. Campbell is the defending champion.
