SCORE Tecate Baja 1000 Route Revealed on SCORE Radio
by Baja Racing Kingpin - Sal Fish
By DIRTnewz Staff
(July 2, 2007)SCORE CEO Sal Fish announced on his bi-weekly radio program the slated course for this year's SCORE Baja 1000. It was over six-months ago that Sal Fish and his SCORE Team announced at last season's award party the intended route for the 40th Anniversary of the longest point-to-point off road race in the world. However, speculation on course layout has run wild, enhanced by the cancelling of the 2007 SCORE San Felipe 250 earlier this year.
Joining host Cameron Steele and special guests, Will Higman, Ryan Arciero, Pete Sohren and Monster Energy's Alan Pflueger, SCORE's heart and soul of desert racing announced to the world that he's been working diligently over the past six months to put the race course together.
The race will ceremoniously begin in Tijuana, Mexico on Sunday, November 11, 2007 with racers embarking on a parade from Tijuana to Ensenada. Racing action will begin early Tuesday morning and the course will follow the same route as the 2007 SCORE Tecate Baja 500 until reaching Mike's Sky Ranch. Once arriving to Mike's Sky Ranch the course will change direction in comparison to this year's earlier race and head to the right after crossing the water crossing at Mike's.
From Mike's the route takes racers to El Coyote and then behind Meling Ranch to Santa Domingo. This will keep racers off the Pacific Coast until reaching further south on the race course. Passing through Santa Domingo the route will head to El Marmol and then exit to the Mexico's Hwy 1 near Catavina. Entering the highway, teams will travel to Chapala Dry Lake and head to Coco's Corner.
Calamajue Wash, a mere 8 miles from Coco's Corner, will test those that have not ventured into the Baja Mud and those that survive will continue onward to Bahia de Los Angeles.
Not even the halfway point as of yet, teams will forge ahead from LA Bay to El Arco following the 2006 SCORE Baja 1000 course to San Ignacio and points south. From San Ignacio the route heads to Scorpion Bay via Datil, a remote fishing village perched on a sand spit of the torrential Pacific Ocean, before arriving to the calm and gorgeous Scorpion Bay.
Leaving Scorpion Bay, racers will head into the mountains before emerging in Loreto and going through the difficult single-track and the deep silt before Constitution. Trudging through the darkness racers will navigate along the rugged Baja coastline near the Pacific Ocean arriving to El Tomate when instead of heading to La Paz to the left, they will continue south towards Todos Santos.
The course heads inland before arriving to Todos Santos and the lush wet hills of winter will challenge those left in the wild of Baja. From Todos Santos and beyond, teams can expect to arrive to a massive contingent at the finish line in Cabo San Lucas.
